Burial 1 Jun 2009 Magnolia Cemetery, Orange Park, Clay, Florida, United States Notes - Elsie Marcella Bakewell, who would have been 97 years old on July 3, 2009, passed away peacefully at Heartland Health Care Center of Orange Park, Florida on May 22, 2009. She had been faithfully cared for there for about five years. On Monday, June 1, 10 a.m., Miss Bakewell will be interred as a Veteran of WWII in the Lynch Family plot, Magnolia Cemetery, 1040 Kingsley Ave., Orange Park, FL 32073. The Rev. Jess McCrosky will officiate. At 11a.m., following the graveside service, the Rev. Dr. Timothy Roberts will conduct a service of worship at Orange Park Presbyterian Church, 1005 Park Avenue, Orange Park, FL 32073. Miss Bakewell, a lifelong Presbyterian, was a member of the Orange Park Presbyterian Church for forty-five years. As an ordained Elder, she devoted much time and effort to the church ministries, was a student of the Bible, and received the honor of Life Membership in Presbyterian Women in 1981. Elsie became the eldest child of North Dakota pioneers, Frank H. and Jennie May Thompson Bakewell, after the death in infancy of their firstborn son, Harold. Her siblings were: Curtis Bakewell, two years younger, who died in 1974 of injuries received in a farming accident; Ruth Bakewell Lynch, nine years younger, who died of colon cancer in 1999; and Warren Bakewell, the youngest sibling, who died in 1945, while serving in the Army Air Corp during WWII. In addition to her siblings and her parents, Elsie was predeceased by her sister- in-law, Margarette Smith Bakewell, widow of her brother, Curtis; and, nephew, Stuart Warren Bakewell, son of her brother Curtis. Elsie is survived by her brother-in- law, Garland "Jake" Lynch of Orange Park, FL, who, with her late sister, Ruth, assisted Elsie in living a productive, independent life as a retired, single woman. Dear to her heart were her nephews and their families: her sister Ruth's sons, Michael Noble of Dothan, AL, his son Michael Bakewell Nobel and daughter Anne Noble; and Mitchel Noble of Santa Monica, CA. The three sons of her late brother, Curtis, are: Bruce Bakewell and his wife, Nancy, of Williston, ND, whose adult children are Suzi Lee and Jason Bakewell; Roger Bakewell and his wife, Sheryl, of Alexandria, MN, with adult children, Lesley Beth Meehan and Tonya Dreher; Stuart Bakewell, deceased, survived by his widow, Linda, of Fortuna, ND, with adult children, April Frieze and Kristin Underhill. In addition to these family members, Elsie is survived by eight great grandnieces and eight great grandnephews of whom she would be so proud. Although to these family members she was known as Aunt Elsie, to many of the children in the church she was known as Miss Elsie. Miss Elsie requested her dear neighbors and close friends, Wayne and Jackie Dycus, now living in Pensacola, FL, be remembered as family, as well, for all the joy they and their daughters, Michelle and Paula brought to her life. Elsie Bakewell will be remembered as a patriot, having enlisted during WWII, serving in Italy and North Africa as a WAC. She was a teacher of social studies before the war, a school basketball coach (at 5' 9" she must have been a good one), attended business school and worked as an executive secretary for the Red Owl Grocery Store Company in Minneapolis, MN for many years. For about fifteen years while she worked there and lived in Hopkins, MN, Elsie had the care and companionship of her mother who lived with her. When her mother died, Elsie moved to be near her sister, Ruth, in Orange Park. With her grocery store experience she was able to go to work for one of the Davis family members in the Winn Dixie grocery store chain for about five years. Elsie then decided that to make the best use of her time as a WAC, she would work in a civil service job, which she was able to acquire at Naval Air Station Jacksonville, FL; where she retired. Elsie loved knitting, quilting and working counted cross stitch and needlepoint. She donated a quilt to the Presbyterian Conference Center, Camp Montgomery, in Keystone Heights, FL, to be used as a wall hanging. Her sister, Ruth, donated one, as well. As the daughter of an American frontier family, Elsie survived and thrived in what she described in a letter as, "primitive conditions." She became educated and made the most of her opportunities; kept a strong faith all her life, loved her lord and savior, Jesus Christ, whom she served as long as she was able; and never stopped caring about her family.
